Dear Friend,
Roughly a year ago I was having dinner with a family friend
who is twice my age (remember, I’m just 21…), and when the
bill came, sadness grew over his face as he literally
emptied his wallet to pay for his share.
I remember feeling a deep level of guilt as I watched
this great and talented professional, who worked 50-60 hours
a week, struggle to simply pay for dinner. I suppose I felt
guilty knowing that I earned more money than him, worked
less and enjoyed my life more (I’m not being arrogant,
that’s just how I felt).
I remember falling into a certain daze and then
abruptly waking up when I heard him take a deep sigh. I
asked him if everything was OK and I’ll never forget his
response. He said, “Anik, I have to confess, I asked you to
dinner today because I need your help…”
I couldn’t believe it, I mean I am only 21 years old
– this person was like a father to me, what could I possibly
do to help? And then I realized that I had something he (and
many others) could only wish for – and maybe I was the only
person he knew that could help.
His exact words to me: “Anik, how do you do it? How
do you do so well when you’re still in college? I feel
embarrassed, but Anik, I need your help – show me what
you’re doing…”
