Wendy Davis, writing on Online Media Daily reports

New BT Principles May Not Go Far Enough To Stop Regulation

"BT" for those who are wondering, stands for "behavioral targeting" standards. Ms. Davis says, "a coalition of the major ad industry trade groups have issued new privacy principles for online behavioral advertising, or tracking people as they surf the Web and serving ads based on sites visited." The principles were issued in response to the prospect of new regulations being issued by the powers-that-be.

Affiliates Can Win In The Media Buy Game

That's what Erin Cigich on the Adotas website. She says, "One of the absolute coolest things about affiliate marketing is the fact that a single affiliate can take on a Fortune 500 company for ad space on a site like MSNBC." Ms. Cigich goes on to explain the advantages have over agency media buyers.

Great News re CA and Hawaii Advertising Tax (Amazon Tax)

On the 5 Star Affiliate Blog, Linda Buquet says, "Governor Schwarzenegger just committed - NO advertising tax (affiliate sales tax) in CA."

And Hawii's Governor Lingle also vetoed the online tax bill.

Overstock Terminates California Affiliates

States are looking to tax anything that's not already taxed. It's a short list. Advertising seems to be at the top of it. Shawn Collins says on his blog, "The media is making the state advertising tax issue out to be all about Amazon, but there are many thousands of other affiliate programs out there that may well fire affiliates in proactive or reactive measures against the legislation. Yesterday, Overstock served walking papers to affiliates in California."

Jonathan says, "going direct to an advertiser means that you go directly to the website that you're promoting through an affiliate network and essentially bypass the affiliate network" and that's a bad idea. He tells us why.

It's the last day of June. I want to start today's report on a sad note. Billy Mays was a one-of-a-kind. He was the master of the infomercial....a hero to all of us who advertise. Billy Mays died of apparent heart failure. He was only 50 years old.

I didn’t have a good answer except that I haven’t." she goes on to give some useful tips about using a newsletter to build a list.

On his Brandmouthing podcast this week, Shawn Collins is talking about what happens to your brand when you pass away. Gavin O'Malley, writing on Online Media Dailey, says, "The layoffs keep coming at News Corp. interactive units. Just a week after MySpace announced plans to cut its workforce by 30% -- or roughly 425 employees --Fox Interactive Media unit Photobucket has let go a third of its staff...."

Amazon affiliates in North Carolina and Hawaii woke up this morning and found out they'd been zapped. The laws haven't actually passed yet but Amzaon is practicing a little CYA! They don't want to get stuck if the law is retroactive.

Dennis Yu posted on Jonathan Volk's blog about Google's new service...."that ties all your numbers together, has free domestic calling and discounted international calling, voicemail transcription, phone routing, call forwarding, conference calling, call recording, and more".

Amazon to Drop NC Affiliates if Advertising Tax Passes

On the 5 Star Affiliate Blog Linda Buquet says, "The latest development in the advertising tax front is not good news at all." She's right! North Carolina is close to passing the anti-affiliate sales tax. They're so close that Amazon has already sent out notices to affiliates in North Carolina saying that if the tax is enacted Amazon will drop them.

Forbes on the Advertising Tax

Shawn Collins is steamed. There's an article in Forbes; "Taxing a Virtual Presence" written by Lee Gomes that has made Shawn a little hot under the collar. Shawn says, "First off, the article didn’t include any perspective from an affiliate marketer, and the view of affiliate marketers was rather narrow and uninformed". But what really burned Shawn up was the statement, " “a large percentage of all spam e-mails are from aspiring affiliate marketers”....WHOA! Who says so? Where are the statistics to back that up. That's what Shawn wants to know. I want to know, too.

According to the Internet Retailer website, "Since launching its e-commerce site a year ago, multichannel bookseller Borders Group Inc. has expanded its number of Borders Rewards program members by 23% to more than 32 million, the retailer says."

Q1 online sales recover, if you can call it that, from their Q4 dip

Based on recession numbers, “Flat is the new up" according to Internet Retailer. "Online sales in the first quarter were flat compared to Q1 sales a year ago, comScore reports. While that is pretty grim news by historical standards, it’s an improvement over the 3% decline that comScore measured in the fourth quarter of 2008."
